Eat Sheet: The Return of Mayor Biko, Hanamaruken’s Sushi, and Decadent Dulce Gatas

Looking for new and interesting eats to experience this weekend?

For this edition of Eat Sheet, we swoon over comforting kakanin, pinch our chopsticks on new sushi, and indulge in an Ilonggo delicacy.

Mayor Biko Reopens Kitchen

This home-based kitchen is a good kind of one-two punch in my book: they serve amazing kakanin (rice cakes), and they went cheeky with their name, because we do love a good pun. Mayor Biko has been satisfying many households with their freshly cooked biko: chewy, sticky, sweet, and nostalgic.

They have closed shop for a while because they relocated, and so they used this transition period to make sure they can recreate the same kakanin magic their customers love in a smaller space. Challenge accepted by Mayor Biko — and now, they are ready to take in orders! Old customers can expect the same delicious rice cake they love, their sensational latik sauce generous and the perfect way to sweeten every big bite of the rice cake. The biko for me is best consumed as soon as it’s delivered to your doorstep — fresh and hot — while letting it cool in room temperature gives the latik a chewy consistency. The owners share that some customers prefer to toast the biko to give the latik some crunch!

Mayor Biko is available in 2 sizes: 11” for P499 and 16” for P699, so you can have your sweet kakanin fix in different sharing sizes to enjoy with everyone.

Mayor Biko will open for advance orders starting this weekend and will begin to serve their freshly made Biko by the bilao beginning October 6, 2021. Pre-ordering is highly recommended to secure your slots! Follow @mayorbiko on Instagram for the latest updates.

Hanamaruken Ramen Introduces New Sushi Line

Now rolling into Trinoma are four new flavors of torched sushi, making its way into the menu of Hanamaruken Ramen! The new aburi sushi line is exclusively available at this particular branch of the ramen shop, and every roll is saucy and flavorful, you’ll probably ditch dipping these sushis into soy sauce!

All aburi sushi are priced at P320 for 6 pieces, and there’s enough variety to cater to your craving. For those wanting a sweeter bite the California Aburi’s ripe mangoes and marinated kani is the combination for you; if you’re skipping seafood, the Kakuni Aburi pairs torched tender pork spare rib with crisp cucumber and pickled radish. Personal favorites are the Salmon Belly Aburi laced with cream cheese, and the Spicy Tuna-Mentaiko Aburi with a marinated spicy tuna maki getting an extra kick with spicy mayo.

DG Baby: A Blissful Snack for Your Sweet Tooth

Goopy, chewy, and decadent, the Dulce Gatas is a delicacy hailing from the ‘sweet’ province of Negros that really shows how Negrenses love their sugary treats and are experts in concocting all sorts of snacks and sweets that make for perfect pasalubong (and late-night snacking).

Now you can get the goodness of homemade Dulce Gatas from Silay right here in Manila with DG Baby (Dulce Gatas Baby)! This small business now brings in real homemade dulce gatas from Negros so you can enjoy this carabao milk candy any way you wish at home.

Dulce Gatas in Bite-Size Pieces (Box of 21 pcs for P370)

Pair it with your favorite carbs like crackers or bread; serve it with coffee, hot chocolate, or milk; slather it on top of your favorite fruits like bananas and strawberries. This very versatile snack is also perfect in different temperatures, whether you want warm dulce gatas slathered in between pandesal, room temp (a favorite of the owners), or chilled straight from the fridge. Think of it as a leveled-up caramel sauce, with a more complex flavor profile than dulce de leche.

DG Baby’s dulce gatas are available by the tub (P440 for 500g) and by the box (P370 for 21 bite-size pieces at 300g) here in Manila. To order, message DG Baby on Instagram (@dgbaby_ph) or on Viber at 0998-4569181. Fresh batches are flown from Bacolod to Metro Manila every Friday, so delivery and pick-up options are on the same day and over the weekend.
